Do CEREC® Crowns Require Special Care?

CEREC® crowns give you a more convenient way to get your teeth protected with these versatile oral restorations. These crowns are made onsite at the dentist's office using a CEREC® milling machine that works similarly to the way a 3D printer works. CEREC® removes the need for multiple dental visits to get a crown. It makes it possible to get a crown that looks like real teeth in a single trip to the dentist.

Taking care of CEREC® crowns

Just as is the case with conventional crowns, CEREC® crowns do not require any special care. Good oral hygiene is all that is needed to keep these restorations in good condition. Those who practice good oral hygiene regularly can expect their crown to last anywhere between 15 and 25 years.

Here are some other things patients can do to get the most out of their CEREC® crowns:

• Avoid biting on hard items: Crowns are designed to be able to handle the bite forces that teeth deal with, but they are not as strong as real teeth. Teeth are the strongest, most durable part of a person's body. Biting on hard items like ice, hard candies or fingernails can chip away at crowns, slowly destroying the restoration. Such habits can also lead to a crown breaking.
• Stay away from sticky foods: Dentists recommend avoiding sticky foods for the first few days after getting a dental crown. Such foods pull down on the outer surfaces of teeth when chewing, and it can lead to the restoration looking dislodged.
• Wear protective gear: Just as is the case with regular teeth, teeth that have been covered with a crown can still be damaged by trauma. People with crowns can reduce the risk of their teeth or crowns becoming damaged during physical activities by wearing appropriate protective gear, like helmets and mouthguards. Protective gear like nightguards can be used to protect teeth from teeth grinding.
• Regular dental visits: Regular visits to the dental clinic gives a dentist the chance to inspect any crowns the patient has and to perform any repairs that are needed. As a result, the longevity of the patient's crown is increased

What to expect when getting a CEREC® crown

The process of getting a CEREC® crown could not be more straightforward. It starts with the dentist evaluating the patient to determine if a crown is the best way to address their problems. Once the patient is cleared for crowns, the dentist will prepare any teeth that need them.

Digital images are taken and used to generate a computer model of the patient's teeth. The model is used to design the patient's restoration until the patient and dentist are both satisfied with what the crown will look like. The information is then sent to a CEREC® machine that creates the customized restoration from a block of ceramic. The patient walks out of the dentist's clinic with their smile restored.
