5 Aesthetic Benefits of CEREC® Crowns and Inlays

The technology of CEREC® crowns and inlays allows patients to revive their smile without having to spend extra time at the dentist's office. With this method, it is possible to get an inlay or crown in one visit.

How it works

With traditional crowns and inlays, the patient must come into the office for X-rays and impressions. This information goes to an off-site lab where a technician makes the restoration piece. It is different with CEREC®. The dentist takes 3D images of the patient's mouth and can make the inlay or crown right in the office. Using computer technology, the pictures are sent to a milling unit in the office. The machine makes the piece out of a ceramic block. The dentist checks the fit and the patient's bite to make sure it is secure.

What it looks like

This treatment can improve the appearance of the smile in many ways:

1. Color matched with the other teeth

Some crowns and inlays are made of metal or porcelain fused to metal. These stand out because of their metallic color. CEREC® crowns should blend in with the surrounding teeth. The patient and dental professional can select a color shade that looks natural. Regularly brushing the crown or inlay along with the other tooth helps minimize discoloration.

2. Normal shape

Before placing a crown, the dentist must shave down the affected tooth. The crown caps the damaged tooth with the result looking like a real tooth. The dentist can make sure the crown looks like other teeth in the mouth and that it matches what the tooth looked like before it was damaged.

3. Regular size

The last thing a patient wants is a crown that is noticeably smaller or larger than the rest of the teeth. The computer technology of CEREC® is accurate and precise. The final product from the milling unit is according to the specifications and measurements that the dentist designs after taking the 3D images. It is often virtually impossible to detect that there is a crown or inlay in a patient's smile.

4. Durability against wear and tear

CEREC® crowns and inlays are not meant to be a short-term solution. The ceramic material is strong, allowing the patient to bite into most things without worrying about breakage. With proper care and maintenance, these restorations can last for 15 years or longer, even after continual chewing and use.

5. Greater preservation of the natural tooth

Getting a crown or inlay means removing part of the tooth. With CEREC®, less removal is necessary. This means there is less drilling and invasive work. Plus, it can help maintain the person's natural smile.
