What to Expect During a CEREC Same Day Crown Procedure

If you want to get a dental crown in a single day, consider the CEREC procedure. This procedure for same-day crown fabrication and placement will save you lots of time. Before you schedule an appointment, you want to know what occurs during the procedure. Learn more about the procedure and then make your appointment.
The CEREC crown procedure
The traditional crown procedure requires a minimum of two office visits. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the tooth and places the temporary crown. The permanent crown is placed during the second visit. Patients do not need a temporary crown with the CEREC procedure. The entire process is completed in one visit.
Preparing the tooth
The first step in the procedure is to prepare the tooth. The dentist removes the decayed portions of the tooth and shapes it to hold the crown. With a traditional crown, dentists normally strip more than 70 percent of the healthy tooth structure. They do not remove nearly as much of the tooth for same-day crowns.
Taking impressions
Patients are often wary of getting impressions at the dentist’s office. The putty-like substance placed in impression trays can cause gagging. Fortunately, dentists use digital impressions for CEREC crowns. Dentists use a small camera to take three-dimensional images of the tooth that requires treatment. This is much more comfortable than traditional impressions.
Creating the crown
The impressions are transferred to a computer. The dentist views the impressions and creates a model. The model resembles natural teeth. The dentist also uses a shade chart to select the right color for the crown. The dentist creates the model quickly with the help of computer technology.
Fabricating the crown
Dentists that offer the CEREC crown procedure have milling machines in their offices. These machines create dental crowns out of blocks of ceramic. The milling process usually takes around 15 minutes. The milling process might be fast, but it is also accurate.
Placing the crown
The dentist takes the crown from the milling machine and polishes it. The crown is compared to the existing teeth to ensure it is a match. The dentist then checks the fit and cements the crown in place. The dentist provides aftercare instructions for the patient.
What to bring to the procedure
The procedure is very quick, and patients can make the time go by even faster by bringing a book or digital device along. Patients will have approximately 30-45 minutes of downtime while the model is created, and the crown is fabricated. This time flies by when patients have a book or device to use. They can read or play a game on a device, and then the crown will be ready in no time.
Schedule a CEREC crown procedure
The same-day dental crown procedure can save you a huge amount of time. Your dentist will prepare your tooth, take digital impressions and build a digital model of your tooth. The model will be sent to the milling machine and then your crown will be placed. If you want to get a crown in a single day, talk to your dentist today.
