A smile makeover is done to help people change the appearance of their smile. An unappealing smile can make people feel embarrassed and unattractive. A typical smile makeover includes multiple dental procedures, depending on what adjustments need to be done on the patient’s oral cavity.
Each smile makeover is unique to the patient, and the initial consultation usually covers what the patient wants to change about their smile. This article describes what a regular smile makeover consultation looks like.
Designing the smile
The smile makeover is a distinct combination of cosmetic dentistry procedures that enhances the appearance and health of the smile. During the consultation, the dentist will ask the patient about what they dislike about their smile. If the patient is not sure of the procedures they need, the dentist will provide recommendations.
First, the dentist will consider the patient’s oral structure, oral health and alignment. The position of their teeth, skin color, lip and gums as well as their facial structure is considered as well. Afterward, the dental expert will be able to create a personalized cosmetic treatment. At this point, the patient will be able to ask whatever questions they have about any dental procedures and what to expect after the treatment.
Patients must keep in mind that the smile makeover is mainly about them. They are allowed to decide whatever they want with their smile. Since some of the procedures are irreversible, it is better to choose a professional and experienced cosmetic dentist to handle the smile makeover process.
Procedures available for a smile makeover
The treatment plan for a smile makeover can include procedures to correct dental issues such as crooked smiles, tooth discoloration, gummy smiles, chipped teeth and a missing tooth.
•If the teeth are not sparkling white, the dentist will recommend teeth whitening. The treatments are available in two forms – take-home whitening kit and in-office professional whitening. At the office, a dental hygienist will rub a whitening gel on the teeth. This treatment targets and removes all the stains on the enamel and dentin. The other whitening treatment is available as custom whitening trays that patients can use at home with a whitening gel. This option is more convenient for patients who do not have the time for dental visits, although the result takes longer and is less drastic
•For teeth alignment, the dentist may recommend braces or Invisalign. Invisalign are sets of clear aligners that are worn on the teeth for 20 to 22 hours daily. They are custom made from plastic and designed to fit over the teeth to shift them to their proper positions. The treatment usually takes between nine months to two years and is totally discreet, unlike traditional metal braces
•Porcelain veneers are available for correcting imperfections on the tooth. They produce drastic results and can be used for a tooth that is discolored, broken, chipped, slightly misaligned, oddly shaped or fractured. The veneers will mask all the physical impairments to make the tooth more aesthetically appealing
Other procedures include laser contouring, dental crowns, implants and dental bonding.
